    snoooooooooooooow!
No idea how much snow there is in Mainz, but that's what we've got in Wörrstadt:

And the cat is like "Going outside? Are you kidding??? Go outside yourself, can opener!! I'm staying right here on the very hot heater."

[edit] -14°C btw, and had -15°C a few hours ago. Brrr! [/edit]

Eeeep.

~~Fan-Kalender mit Ereignissen seit meinem letzten Eintrag:~~

07.12. Schnee, ganz viel Schnee in meinem LJ. Wheee!! Vielen Dank! \o/

Off the shelf program and a tiny bit of hardware
hacks a multi thousand dollar to multi million dollar drone.

That pretty much sums up almost all the problem right there doesn't it?

Couldn't be bothered to install a $50 encryption card because there was 'no way' the insurgents could hack it.

    Unbelievable.

How health care is supposed to work
Read Barry Windsor Smith's tale of his health scare from 1975 here. Think about how much money his Weapon X storyline made for Hollywood, who used it in the X Men movies and that crappy Wolverine spin-off. Now tell me that we as a society cannot afford to pay for everyone's health care. I say that we as a society cannot afford not to. Too many creations of importance come from artists who cannot afford health care, who make shit money while corporations thrive for years on their properties. We would all be culturally impoverished without their contributions. We can at least pool together to give them health care -- by which I mean, give everyone health care. You never know who will turn out to be the next J.K. Rowling, that former single mother on welfare whose taxes now probably keep the British government afloat. It's not just about artists -- it's about unlocking human potential in any arena. We unfortunately cannot measure how many acts of great worth never happened due to our national health crisis.

-7C - snow (slowly building itself into a snow storm)
Woohooo. My shelving just arrived. I won't know for sure until I measured it all, but it sure looks okay at first glance. And in light of the blowing snow the guys were even nice enough to carry it all inside. Right now it's blocking the stairs downstairs, so I'll be busy moving it all up here. The long boards will have to come up one at a time.

Now I'll have to decide exactly what color varnish I want for them. Something honeyish, methinks. A trip to the Canadian Tire is in order. Weather permitting, that is. The snowflakes are dancing like a whole dervish convention out there, and occasionally this fist of wind slams into the side of the house. Which, when it does so at my window looks pretty impressive. There's a wind chill of -15C, and we're expecting around 20cm of snow today. On days like this it feels awfully nice to have a roof over one's head and a working furnace in the basement.

The All Seeing Eye Has Gone Deaf
In “Lord of the Rings” the Eye of Sauron is depicted as this giant thing that hovers over Mordor, scanning information in all the world. Google is the new Sauron. I used to like Google. In part because of the old maxim, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” I hate Microsoft, the dreamcrushers, the vaporware making spindoctors who crushed countless small little start ups in the eighties by making a piece of software, giving it away for free and then abandoning it.

Google has been giving away a lot of stuff for free. That makes them popular. They have also kept their page spotless and simple. But when I noticed on their news filter that they had begun showing more Fox news stories than usual, I was concerned. If you haven’t been following the news lately, Ruprect Murdoch has been threatening to remove his content from google because google wasn’t paying him. It was fairly obvious that Google was trying to encourage him not to do this by tweaking the results of their search engines to show more FOX stories.

I tried to contact google to complain about it, but finding a live person is next to impossible. GOOGLE HAS NO LIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Indeed, they don’t even have an email department that you can send anything to. Fortunately, I know a trick that will always let me get my opinion through. I went to their investor services department and sent them feedback. Now, there was a button that asked if I was a stockholder, and I clicked ‘no’ so my concerns might have gone into the trashbasket, but really that’s the risk you take when you send any company feedback.

But even that didn’t turn me against Google.

No, what did it was this statement by Google’s CEO:

“If you don’t want worry about information getting out, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”

Ie….if you have concerns about privacy, you are clearly a criminal. The difference between Google and Microsoft is…If I want a computer that has an operating system that does what I want, I need to go to Microsoft. If I want a computer that WORKS I have to go to apple. If I want a search engine, I just go to a different web page.

Wake up Google. You don’t hold me hostage. In fact, I can just leave my blogs on your web page and skip you for everything else entirely. There are other search engines, other news feeds and other ways to get calendar data.

Thanks but no thanks. I’ll wait a few days to see if Google responds to this but for the most part, Google has turned from Holy to at least dark gray and potentially pitch tar unholy in my eyes.

    Obligatory Weather Post *g*
There's snow on my LJ, one shiny crystalline flake which, unlike others, didn't come with a name or note attached. Thank you so much, you, whoever sent it! :-)

I feel I really ought to get back into posting on a (bi-)weekly basis, like I did during the first couple of years, when this whole journalling thing was fresh and new.

For starters just a few more or less disconnected questions:

    - anyone else watching Flash Forward, enjoying the show despite its flaws and for some strange reason simply not posting about it (which is exactly what I do at the moment)?
    - anyone else who's stumbled across Lew Grossman's The Magicians and thinks that the novel has got a decidedly "Gaiman-esque" flair?
-anyone who knows whether there's any The Prestige fan fiction out there that is actually worth reading?

So much for today, all the best wishes and a peaceful, relaxing Christmas time :-)

    Yours, B.

    Uhm...

    Ich mein: ich freu mich ja über die Pixelgeschenke, aber... WARUM krieg ich die? o.O;;

    Eric Woolfson died last week
I used to be a big fan of TAPP and especially "Tales of Mystery and Imagination". Still have it on vinyl, still think it's the cat's pyjamas. What a darn shame. He wasn't that old either, 64.

    -2C - light snow
The cats knocked down the bird feeder this morning, and I went outside to hang it back up, my steps crunching through the wintry veggie beds. The ground is finally freezing, and there's a thin sheet of ice on a first corner of the pond.

We had a wonderful 2.Advent afternoon/evening with friends (thanks guys!), and when we were waving goodbye just now there was a light dusting of snow on the ground and some gentle flakes wafting on the air. Not too cold, though, a nice christmassy night. :o)

Merlin Vid Rec: There Are Legends
There Are Legends by [info]ras_elased. ♥
Instead of Arthur being taken to Avalon and Merlin being immortal and waiting for Arthur to be reincarnated, Merlin trades in his immortality to save Arthur's life, so now Arthur is immortal and waits for Merlin to return from Avalon. Centuries go by, and he mostly lives in the past, unable to let go, until one day he passes Merlin on the street...

    0C - mostly cloudy
Well, the snow did melt again, and the ground is still/again green, not very christmassy. There's a tentative snow forecast for Monday. We'll see.

We got our RONA delivery last night (well, most of it), and I'm all kinds of sore for hauling 4x8 drywall sheets into the basement.

My shelving got delivered as uncut sheets sheets, despite the hour I had spent in their cut shop for instructions and the guy taking notes. I called them and they sent someone to bring the cut boards and take the whole sheets away, but it still wasn't right (they'd forgotten to cut the bullnose at the front), so I had to send it back again. Le sigh! Now I'm waiting for a call or new delivery. The suspense of what I'll get next is killing me. I guesstimated toothpicks, and the tiger quipped "But bullnosed ones."

If you ever deal with RONA, leave them idiot proof instructions in writing. The guys are all very nice, but they don't seem to communicate very well.
